Pumpkin pies and qassatat were the order of the day in Manikata this morning, where a good number of families turned up for the Pumpkin Festival organised by the Manikata Farmers Association.

While the pumpkin is widely used in the north, it is not so much in demand in the south and the aim of the festival was to increase the popularity of the vegetable.

Besides an array of food in which the pumpkin was the main ingredient, wares on sale also included jams and other Maltese delicacies. And while the parents could enjoy the food, their children could enjoy themselves in a purposely set up play area.

The event was a bigger success than what the organisers could have hoped for, since most of the food was gone by just after noon.
