A consumer has the right to ask a trader not to make any distance contract solicitation addressed to him or her.

If the trader persists, the consumer is liable for compensation for inconvenience and damages.

The regulations also confer that a consumer is not liable to pay a trader for any unsolicited goods or services.

A consumer may treat such goods or services supplied to him by a trader as if they were an unconditional gift.

The Distance Selling Regulations, relating to the right of cancellation and to the obligations of the trader - providing information and delivering an order within 30 days - do not apply to transactions involving the supply of foodstuffs, beverages or other goods intended for everyday consumption.

The provision of these regulations does not cover accommodation, transport, catering or leisure services.

When shopping online, precautions need to be taken. It is important to make sure that you have these details when completing an order online:

• Name and address of the trader.

• Correct cost of the item, together with the currency and methods of payment.

The cost of the item should also include other charges that may apply, such as delivery costs and VAT.

• Time and schedule of delivery;

• Information relating to the security of the site.

• Make sure you receive a confirmation via e-mail after the placement of the order.

Prior to placing an order online, it is advisable that the terms and conditions of the vendor are thoroughly read to make yourself aware of your rights and obligations under the contract.

It is important that you check your credit card statement after you place an order online, to ensure that the correct amount has been withdrawn.

Make sure that you are aware of any cooling off periods and that your cancellation rights are available to you as a consumer.

Finally, never give your user name, password or other confidential information via e-mail.

There will be a follow-up article next week with information on internet auctions, escrow companies and how one can identify scams.
