Turn to 30°C when washing clothes
After having launched a consumer educational campaign in April, Ariel is once again reminding consumers and the public that they can make significant savings on energy consumption and bills, simply by turning to 30°C!
Research conducted by Ariel and endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust (UK) shows that we can reduce energy simply by doing our laundry at 30°C and washing at cooler temperatures. A 30°C cycle uses five times less energy than a 90°C cycle!
With water and electricity charges at an all-time high, both in Malta and globally, Ariel wants to generate more awareness on how to save energy by washing clothes utilising the advances of modern washing machines and the excellent performance of Ariel at low temperatures.
Ariel is currently demonstrating the product’s impeccable results in cold water, offering practical advice on cold washing and washing
at low temperatures. Until stock lasts, Ariel is giving away a free energy saving bulb with every one 80 scoop packet purchased (or two Ariel liquid of 2.5 litres) in order to drive home the energy saving message. This means
consumers will not only save on the wash but will also save €34 on their electricity bill, thanks to the energy-saving bulb.
By being aware of the benefits of cold washing and taking day-to-day measures that help save energy, consumers will save energy, save money, and of course contribute to the wellbeing of the environment we live in.
A few tips for reconciling washing efficiency with energy savings
- Choose a good washing machine
In conformity with European standards washing machines now come with, energy efficiency label with rating from A+ (most efficient) to G (least efficient), which allows consumers to judge the efficiency of the appliance in terms of energy savings, washing and drying. This label also gives the power consumption in kWh for a 60°C white cotton cycle, the drum
capacity in kg, and the water consumption for a 60°C white cotton cycle. Other optional information may be given, such as the noise level during the washing or drying phases.
- Clean the washing machine’s filter regularly
- Favour cold washing
The technical characteristics of fabrics have evolved substantially in recent years. Detergent manufacturers have adapted to this trend, and washing methods too have been transformed. 95% of washing machines now offer a “cold programme” function. Cold washing is the future. Over the last 10 years, the percentage of machines capable of washing at 30°C or less has risen from 21% to 30%.
- Wait until the machine is full before doing the washing
It is recommended to wait until the machine is full before switching it on. A full-load wash is much more economical than two half-load washes.
- Don’t mix whites and coloureds
Whites come out cleaner when washed with other whites, and coloureds with other coloureds. It is also recommended to follow the washing instructions for each fabric.
- Follow the recommended dose of detergent
There is no need to use more than the quantities indicated on the packet. Above the recommended dose, adding more of the product will not improve the washing performance. You should also avoid using too little, since you may end up having to wash the clothes again, with a consequent loss of time and increased electricity consumption.
