As readers are aware, bus drivers have been constantly making headlines. When one analyses all that is written the following issues keep coming to the forefront in relation to certain drivers:
They drop off and pick up passengers in the middle of the road, when there is bus bay three metres away!
They forget what the indicators are there for and pull out onto the middle of the road without signalling!
They have not heard of rubbish bags, and use our streets as their rubbish bins!
They get nasty with anyone who dares raise a compliant!
They have no hesitation to throw people of their buses if anyone dares raise an objection!
They drive a bus full of passengers with a hand on the wheel and the other glued to a mobile phone!
They never stop at a junction but make everywhere their right of way!
On the other hand, we have bus inspectors who and are paid to instil discipline but have got far too friendly with the drivers to be ever in a respected position to demand such discipline.
Next time you visit the Valletta bus terminus, watch out for their behaviour, and you will soon notice that it is difficult to identify the inspectors from the drivers, as they are always pulling each others' leg, joking and laughing. If it were not for their uniforms it would be difficult to tell them apart - and then we wonder how most of the bus drivers have now become unmanageable.
Discipline with public transport employees has over the years has been non-existent, and they were constantly allowed to get away with their wrongdoings with the result that they have now become unruly!
Someone got paid to keep them in check but the job was never done as otherwise the public transport system would not be in such a mess!
