Dane Cauchi's letter (Effects of Money-No-Problem Syndrome, October 27) failed to mention that the Nationalist Party in government was the party that managed to consolidate Malta's public finances in a sustainable manner.

The government had implemented an ambitious programme of fiscal consolidation and a comprehensive package of structural reforms not because it was scared of the challenges ahead but because the Nationalist Party believed and still does that challenges can be turned into opportunities. The same applies at this moment.

It is true that the crisis is not affecting us directly but this is a result of serious and responsible economic governance.

Euro entry managed to safeguard our economy and financial system from this turmoil as not only did it give us the backing of a monetary union and a strong international currency but it enhanced our credibility. However, this crisis obliges us to continue pursuing the ongoing reform programme.

The Nationalist Party, in its nature, is forward looking and thus its economic vision is focused on the future potential. This calls for further economic and structural reforms which in time will lead to a stronger and better equipped economy to provide for our wellbeing and more importantly to invest in our children's future.

This is what responsible economic governance is all about and this is where the Nationalist Party excels.
