The Government Property Division is calling in the police after unknown persons forced open rooms at the former Ghajn Tuffieha barracks just days after squatters were evicted.

The Commissioner of Land, Albert Mamo, said inspectors returned to Ghajn Tuffieha yesterday, following a comment posted on timesofmalta.com.

They found that two rooms whose doors had been welded shut after last week's evictions had been forced open. No one was found on the site.

"Inspectors will henceforth keep a closer eye on the areas where enforcement action is carried out," Mr Mamo said.

He admitted, however, that the inspectors, who number only five, have a lot on their plate, with the current programme of enforcement action set to be sustained over the coming months.

"We increased the number of inspectors from two to five over the past month but we need at least 15 so that they can work in teams," Mr Mamo said.

The inspectors yesterday served eviction orders at 10 illegally occupied rooms on the Dwejra lines (part of the Victoria Lines) overlooking Mgarr.

Mr Mamo explained that while some people in the area did have title over some rooms, several others did not. To make matters worse, some had added their own structures to the historic fortifications. They will be removed.
