British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy will meet soon to discuss the financial crisis, Mr Brown's spokesman said yesterday. He told reporters the two leaders, who have helped spearhead Europe's response to the global crisis, spoke by telephone on Sunday and agreed it would be "sensible to meet sometime soon".
He declined to say exactly when or where they would meet.
"If they do meet it will be on the subject of the economy, just to take stock of where we are," he said.
The spokesman added that Mr Brown had spoken by phone with the leaders of India, Hungary and Brazil in recent days, as well as with IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
Mr Brown will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in London on Thursday to discuss the economy, but the spokesman rejected any suggestion Mr Sarkozy would join these talks.
"I wouldn't encourage you down that path," he said.
European Union leaders will meet on November 7 at a special summit to discuss the crisis engulfing world financial markets, and US President George W. Bush will host a meeting of industrialised nations in Washington on November 15.
