Inspectors order squatters out of the Victoria Lines
Inspectors from the Government Property Division are this morning serving notices to squatters at the Victoria Lines in Dwejra (Malta), ordering them to leave within two days.
The historic Victoria Lines - a series of fortifications built in the early years of British rule - include several rooms and tunnels which were used as ammunition stores and billets for the troops.
A number of them at scenic Dwejra, overlooking Mgarr, over the past few years were taken over by squatters, who go there usually on weekends.
The Government Property Division last week evicted squatters from the old barracks at Ghajn Tuffieha.

@Joachim James - just ignore the likes of JJ Camilleri. There's a few of them around who try to turn any topic into a charade against any PN govt. It's the frustration of having to wait another four and a half years that makes them try to always put a PN govt. in a bad light. They can't help it. They thought they had it in the bag seven months ago, but got an unexpected surprise. But then they follow the examples of their leaders, don't they? All is wrong and none is right in this country, they wish! Why don't they try and be constructive and balanced for ones and use POLITICS!!! for the good of the country too and not just for the good of the party.
As for the squatters and what have you, what's going on is a good thing but as others suggested before, the law is there to be obeyed by all. So well done to Jason, and keep up the good work with all illegals please.

Re bastions squatters, isn't it dangerous and insane excavating like moles deep and wide under our bastions! Have a look beneath the St Barbara Bastion! Some excavations could be seen ongoing till recently with skips infront of the boathouses (?). Some are serving as garages for a number of cars/boats each while others serve as workshops for mechanics and the sort! Unbelievable!! We need more and more ministers and public officers made of the stuff Hon Jason Azzopardi is made of.

WELL DONE. Also please look for squatters at the Valletta Bastions. I know that some people who used to live in Valletta Bastions as squatters were given an alternative accomodation in very nice 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom apartments not very far away from the bastions itself. However they still kept their 'old property' which they use as a 'Villeggatura with a very nice view' and also as an extra storage too!! Hope you look at the Valletta Bastions squatters too.

The other day we cycled towards the Tower overlooking Gnejna Bay.....a man sic squatter occupying a ramshackle hut tried to stop us passing through because he claimed that we were trespassing and that the land belonged to him......needless to say, we ignored him and kept on going....what cheek...it is about time that all squatters are evicted from government property.....

Well Done! These squatters has not only taken over the barracks, but some also the road, leaving their big dogs running about and people cannot even go for a walk in the weekends. Lately, an old room which has been there since I don't know when is being converted to a more homely place, with even a garden around, closed with barbed wire. Some of these rooms were also closed with low walls around them, with broken bottles and barbed wire, making it a very dangerous place to visit with kids!!

Wherever you go in Malta you can see "squatters" occupying caves, holes in the walls, abandoned buildings and other places left empty. This is human nature. Squatters are not the best of tenants and when they leave they usually destroy the place. The government should and can avoid this destruction by totally removing illegal buildings no matter who occupies the place. Those other buildings that are historic or legally built should be vacated ,with force if necessary, and leased to bidders with strings attached and money bonds. These new occupiers will have the backing of the law and also be liable to health and safety checks.
There is no other way. If the government is only kicking people out for political reasons then it will backfire. Make them pay to stay. Money makes the world go round.

well done.somebody with backbone at last. Maybe the government can do something with these sites as they did with the waterfront. Give them to private enterprise who can come up with an idea as to what to do with them and keep them secure.

Poor little Joachim.....How low are you trying to stoop, just so an MP knows that you're on his side...?
Anyways, just for the record..I am not a squatter...so dirt merchants like you can continue to throw it...I can take it....
Now its your turn to clear things up, so lets you of so righteous and objective a disposition answer a couple of questions..
Before the last elections...way way back in March....our Prime Minister made a deal with squatters(according to local papers).
Do you agree with such a deal?
If so,do you think that these squatters have more rights than other illegal squatters..?
What makes squatting acceptable in certain cases?
Do you agree that, if the reports were correct, our land was GIVEN AWAY by the same government ?
Probably won't get an answer...
One last thing...look up the definition for politics....Politics is there for us all

@ Jeremy J Camilleri
This gentleman looks like he used to own (?) a place at the Victoria Lines. Seems he is interested like other squatters who are waiting for an alternative place, when quoting "Now...about the squatters who were promised titles before the last election? " Why is this gentleman always mentioning politics all the time? Can't he reason out things more cleverly? Politics are meant for politicians. Keep it up Hon Dr Jason!

What an achievement in just a few months! Well done Jason and keep it up!
As to those justified comments expressing concern regarding the fate of these sites which were occupied by squatters, I just want to remind them that some of these sites have already been handed over to NGO's for better use.

Well done. Public lands and properties belong to the nation, and no one should ever be allowed to exclusively use or occupy them. They exist for the enjoyment of all.
To the Minister. You are rendering a great service to the nation. Please, keep it up and do not stop until you have evicted everyone who is illegally occupying any public property. Perhaps you might consider targeting next the illegal bird-strapping sites surrounding the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples. The time is long overdue for these squatters to finally understand that the overwhelming majority of the people - the often-silent law-abiding folks - are furious and tired of seeing their collective patrimony so blatantly abused by a small minority of law-breakers who think they have some exclusive God-given right to flout the law of the land.

Well done once more.Still a long way to go however! Please don't leave people occupying public open spaces especially in Summer to squat on the foreshore, build concrete platforms, erect large tents, canopies etc and generally prevent others from enjoying their share of the place. I am sure you all know where...everywhere.

Could someone please enlighten me on this topic please, I have read for a few weeks now about the eviction of "squatters" and quite right to, but are these people "squatters" in the fact that they actually live in these places ? or are they called "squatters" because they occupy buildings illegally to store things in or both ?, the reason I am confused is because in the uk a "squatter" is classed as someone who lives in a property without permission, thanks in advance.

Well Done to the Government! One Complaint - I have been trying to forward a complaint to the Land Department about a particular bar with the name Beer Belly at Pjazza San Katald Rabat with tables and chairs blocking people from passing, but the customer service of the Land Department wants me to go to MEPA and obtain a sketch of Pjazza San Katald in order to take action. This is ridiculous! I am a pensioner and I cannot go through this hassle. Please Dr. Jason Azzopardi, we know that you are a Man of Action. Please take action on this one too!!!!!

Do not get me wrong, I am all in favor of this initiative. Evicting the squatters is all very well and good, but do the authorities concerned, intend to put these fortifications and barracks to good use?
Lower St Elmo and St Angelo are good examples, both of which are in a pitiful state.

WELL DONE JASON.
However such places should be taken care of, as otherwise they will fall the prey of vandals, or as Mr Tanti said, the squatters will return.

Mr Tanti instead of trying to perceive this excercise as useless kindly report such actions to the Division concerned. Likewise will be forwarding this bit of news from yourself to all those concerned so that action will be taken once again.

And btw, does anyone know anything regarding the rooms/garages that occupy Gnejna bay? Are they legal or what? Because I find it so annoying that to go swimming on the left side of the bay, you have to pass right in front of them. And btw, if the occupants are there, please go find another spot :-/
John Portelli
Oct 28th 2008, 11:26
Does this mean now that the vacated places will get vandalised?
At Dwejra, thanks to one such squatter, he has managed to protect the fortification from being destroyed by vandals!

Apart from occupying and dirtying the barracks at Dwejra squatters have also the habit ( I beleive they do it on purpose ) of leaving their dogs ( not that kind of dog that some posh ladies do like to carry around in their laps) unleashed, one of which decided to terrify and give
chase to my son as we were peacefully walking past by the road.

Mr Chappelle if people have got their land legally, they have all the right in the world to occupy it. But sorry for you, even boyscouts cannot occupy government land without any title. There are many ways and means how to help philantropic associations. Use these legal means.

Hadd wara hadd tasal ta' kulhadd and no excuses that they have been there for more than 30 years and over or under will give them any right of ownership. That's the law and the law will have to be applied. Squatters will be removed from wherever there is government property. What cannot be removed - (hotels etc) will have to pay for their illegal occupation. The others will have to accept that their time is up and if they won't accept this order, and the government lets them have it their way, then it will be our turn to occupy government land and make it ours. So you see, hadd wara hadd se tasal ta' kulhadd. The government has started the ball rolling.

While these evictions all look good on paper don't be misled. I live near the barracks at Ghajn Tuffieha and the day after the much publicised evictions the previous tenants had moved back in. Just go round the barracks in the evening and you will see cars parked outside and pets in the front yards. Its all spin.

How wonderful to think, if only the barracks in Dwejra and in Ghajn Tuffieha could be made available to Scout Groups... we suffer a shortage of camping sites due to all the land being gobbled up by zeppi and cikku... legally and illegally....
