Something must definitely be in the air! Wine events are thankfully sprouting galore! In the past weeks, we had wine events by Antinori of Wands Ltd, Domaine de la Souffrandiere and Tardieu Laurent from Burgundy and Rhone by Philippe Martinet, Spanish wines from Moreno by Carnaby wines, all at the Xara Palace.
A Chilean Viña Montgras Night by Mirachem at The Blue Elephant followed by another Spanish MasterClass from Carlos Read of Moreno Wines organised by 118 Wines and Carnaby Wines at The Grand Hotel Excelsior. More Spanish Wine at Leonardo Restaurant in Marsaxlokk and a Venetian theme will be presented at Palazzo Parisio by Guerrieri Rizzardi, both by Wands Ltd.
And you thought that was it?? Errrmmm... not really... a sumptuous Super Tuscan night with La Brancaia Wines by Master Group at Essence Restaurant in Golden Sands looms… and I almost forgot to throw in our blind-tasting night of wonderful Aglianico wines organised by the Qatra Wine Club.
All the above covers the period of just over five weeks.
Now, you must be wondering what I’m blogging about today right? Well, you see, my job is intimately wine-related. I am kept informed of all these events and invited to a few of them. It’s technically my job to attend as many as possible meaning that these six weeks would have cost me at least €350 and I would certainly have gained at least 20 pounds….in weight, that is.
However I am by no imaginable means complaining you know. Au contraire, I am very lucky to be involved in a world of magic and awe. You know, I do not generally hold myself to suffer from curiosity pangs. Should anyone wish to divulge something to me, then I am all ears, yet should I not be in the loop of those in the know of who is leaving whom and who is going where, then so be it? No sweat!
In truth, I don’t like curiosity of the nosey type to accompany me in my daily life yet when it comes to wine, I am definitely curious and, come to think of it, must push it up a notch or two to nosey! A spirit that longs for new discoveries, for new characters and for new origins of wine is essential if one is to be truly enamored with the nectar of the gods.
As I sipped my glass of Toro Albalá Don Pedro Ximenes Gran Reserva1979, I couldn’t help but flash back through these past 29 years of my life, knowing that this wine was already in existence, wondering where I was when its grapes were being harvested, what I was doing as it aged in the cellars, was I married when it was being bottled? More curiosity struck as I wondered what the terrain in Penedés in Spain looks like, what Aglianico was going to taste like, how Chilean wine was going to marry Asian food, etc etc.
So it is no wonder I will do my utmost to attend as many wine events as possible, even missing my ever beloved Manchester United hammering Celtic to the goalposts in the Champions League. But wine is my love! Well, so are Man Utd! And red and white are the predominant colours of both, so there!
