Eighty Betfair employees, along with families and friends, recently cleaned up the 1.5-kilometre stretch from Buskett Gardens to Dingli Cliffs as part of the company's commitment to promote and support a healthy environment. For a complete job, Betfair is also sponsoring a number of permanent litter bins around the area.

The event marked the start of an annual national clean-up, organised by the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, which will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. To support the event, Betfair are also committed to other clean-up events, to take place every six weeks throughout winter. The next clean-up will be held on November 23, starting from Buskett Gardens. Residents are encouraged to help.

In the first clean-up, 100 garbage bags of litter were collected and neatly piled on a truck, provided by the ministry. Items collected included mattresses, broken glass, old bikes, scrap metal, general rubbish and a 1970s typewriter.

Tim Edwards, director of operations at Betfair, said Dingli Cliffs is a stunning spot, which will make a difference to Malta's environment if it is cleared up. The distribution of litter bins should help maintain the area's beauty for the future. It was great to see so many people involved, proving their commitment and having fun at the same time.

Betfair is the UK's largest legal online betting company. It operates a 'betting exchange' - a concept it pioneered which has revolutionised the betting ind-ustry.

The company employs over 1,350 people in its main offices in London and Stevenage in the UK, Tasmania in Australia and more than 175 employees in Malta.
