Loggerhead turtle saved from certain death

The rescued turtle, with a fishing line in its mouth.

The crew of a sailing boat and officials from the Malta Maritime Authority, the AFM and BICREF (the Biological Conservation Research Foundation) got together yesterday to rescue this large loggerhead turtle after it was found hooked on a fishing long-line and facing death.

The turtle is now being cared for at the rehabilitation centre run by the Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs at San Lucjan Tower.

A group of nine turtles similarly rescued from certain death after swallowing plastic bags or fishing hooks was released back to the sea earlier this month in an activity attended by a large group of appreciative school children. More turtles are to be released shortly.

Nice work to all the agencies involved. Where was MEPA in all this? It has an on call inspector who should have been present to oversee the welfare of this creature

This is what I call good news. I am very happy to hear it. Good job!!

However, we should give our contribution by not littering and dumping our rubbish anywhere it comes. By our actions we are killing a lot of other species. Everyone should be sensible on this matter.

Well done to all concerned. We must leave no stone unturned to protect life wherever we see it - human and also other species.

Well done all those concerned. After all it is human activity that is putting these creatures in danger. it is only fitting that humans see that this damage is repaired.
