A 44-year-old man who allegedly forced a postwoman to hand him the social security cheque of someone who owed him money was arraigned before a magistrate today.

Benny Muscat, of Cospicua, was also charged with stealing the €88 cheque belonging to Saviour Cachia last Friday, threatening the postwoman, opening mail which was not his and defrauding the Social Security Department..

He pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke upheld a request for bail but noted that Mr Muscat had allegedly committed the crime during the term of a suspended jail term. He was therefore ordered not leave his home, except to sign the police bail book every week and to go to the drug detox centre. She bound him by a personal guarantee of €2,000.
