Glenn Bedingfield becomes MEP
Glenn Bedingfield was elected to the European Parliament yesterday, filling the seat vacated by Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat until June.
The 33-year-old journalist and restaurateur confirmed he will seek re-election next year.
Mr Bedingfield won 62 per cent of the first-count votes during the casual election.
His votes surpassed the 20,000 quota by almost 6,000, making it a landslide victory. He beat competition from Wenzu Mintoff and Robert Micallef, confirming media reports that he was the favourite. Mr Bedingfield said that although it would be difficult to replace Dr Muscat he would step into the new role with commitment, responsibility and loyalty.
He said he would follow on the work of his predecessor using Dr Muscat's staff for a smooth transition.
He would also promote his own issues, including the impact of illegal immigration on Malta, the environment and people's right to free quality healthcare.
