The Public Service Commission has agreed that nine new teachers, who ended up as supply staff due to late publication of their exam results, should be eligible for re-appointment. Yesterday the University of Malta denied responsibility over the late results.

On Monday, the Malta Union of Teachers complained that the teachers, recently hired by the government, had their employment terminated due to "administrative incompetence". The union claimed they were "demoted" to supply teachers instead of being taken on as regular teachers because the results of their re-sits had been published late.

Yesterday the union said the PSC has re-considered the case in the light of clarifications which the commission had been made aware of.

The PSC informed the union that it would declare the teachers eligible for appointment in state schools.

The Faculty of Education categorically denied "that there was any academic or administrative incompetence by any member of staff in regards to this issue".

The University said that as the results of the re-sits concerned final-year students, the assignments were corrected and results submitted, recorded and forwarded to the relevant authorities before the deadline.

The MUT expressed its thanks to the PSC, the Ministry of Education and all those who helped find a just solution to the matter.
