AD to field two candidates for EP election

Alternattiva Demokratika said today that party leader Arnold Cassola and Yvonne Ebejer Arqueros will be its candidates for the European Parliament elections in June.

Dr Cassola came near to being elected in the elections four years ago.

The candidates were approved at AD's annual general meeting this morning.

Mrs Ebejer Arquero, a 44-year-old mother of three, is a PSD teacher in the primary sector. She spent a year studying in the Ukraine and does voluntary work in the social sector.

Dr Cassola is a former Secretary General of the European Green Party and served in the Italian Parliament.

He is the author/editor of over 30 books on the history, literature, language and culture of Malta as well as of books on Green politics in Malta and Europe.

Arnold Cassola would certainly make a good MEP; we would benefit from his experience as chair of the European Greens, chair of the Maltese Greens, and also in the Italian parliament. What matters even more are his policies, and I will be very happy to vote for him next June.

Malta already has capable MEPs such as simon busutiil who makes his presence felt at all times in the name of the Maltese people who elected him. Therefore there is no need to elect an MEP who tried to be a Maltese MEP and failed, tried to be elected in the Italian parliament, has been serving only for a few months as AD leader, and now back to another try at MEP elections.

Arnold Cassola....Il-Malti......The European......L'Italiano.....and now back to The European

Mr Camilleri is this envy or pure ignorance?

Now you see me,
now you don't
now I'm Italian,
now I'm Maltese

Mr. Camilleri,
Could you kindly illuminate us as to what Malta and the Maltese stand to lose by having fellow Maltese giving a direct contribution in other country's parliaments?
Honestly I believe we have all to gain - you may wish to take the hassle to refer to the issues raised by Arnold Cassola during his parliamentary term in the Italian parliament - before coming out with cheap politically tainted opinions.
Maybe some quarters are already getting too hot under the collar about the 'extra' MEP seat?
Robert Callus (on 25/10/08)
Good luck. Malta needs Green representation in the EU.
Louis Grech Marsaxlokk (on 25/10/08)
I wish to augur the best of luck to Prof. Cassola. His experience in the Italian parliament and in the EU is invaluable. There aren't much valid politicians like him in Malta. Hope both AD candidates would do well.
Dr Paul Sant Cassia (on 25/10/08)
Comment for Mr Camilleri:
Your statement is not only unfair and snide, it is also off the mark. It is perfectly acceptable for an individual to represent two constituencies in two different countries. Prof Cassola would join a distinguished list of academics who have represented different constituencies in different countries. Prof Sir Ralph Dahrendorf was a German MP, a German European Commissioner, and then a member of the British House of Lords. It would seem to me that the more experience and the more international the better. Why are you being so nasty? You may disagree with his politics but don't criticise him for his undoubted ability to have achieve some European recognition in the past. As far as I know Prof Cassola has contested some local elections in the past, so what is the problem?
Joseph Camilleri (on 25/10/08)
Arnold Cassola ... what a surprise! Has he now decided to represent Malta? Or will he contest on behalf of another country after he fails to get elected as a Maltese MEP?
