Pinto Wharf quay in Grand Harbour will be extended by 40 metres to provide better berthing facilities for large cruise liners.

Mepa approved the extension yesterday and work will be carried out during winter.

The quay will extend to 300 metres and a ramp, originally built for cargo ships, will be removed.

The application was submitted by Viset, the cruise terminal operator. An application for the dredging of a large section of the seabed off Barriera Wharf (fish market) for use by cruise liners was removed from the original proposal as it entails more studies, particularly related to the archaeological significance of the area.
