The Apple iPhone 3G will be officially launched in Malta very soon, possibly by the end of this month, i-Tech can reveal.

Apple's CEO Steve Jobs surprisingly mentioned Malta by name at the launch of the iconic smartphone last June, saying: "The next time you are in Malta and need an iPhone 3G, it will be there for you." However, the Maltese had to wait several months as Malta was not included in the first batch of 22 countries out of 70 or so that would launch it.

Malta indeed will be in the third batch of around 29 countries around the world that include emerging markets such as those of Brazil, Cameroon, Croatia, Egypt, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, South Africa and Turkey.

Maltese Vodafone customers can already express their interest in iPhone by registering on the company's website.

This newspaper was the first to report in December 2007 about the possibility of iPhone 3G being officially launched locally, possibly by Vodafone Malta since the Vodafone Group was reportedly interested in supporting the handset. This was later confirmed by Apple's website that names Vodafone Malta as the supplier of iPhone in Malta.

The first version of iPhone has been available unofficially in Malta with hacked handsets. Some retailers were even promoting it in their advertising campaigns.

The launch of iPhone 3G follows the launch of RIM's Blackberry, also by Vodafone Malta, a few weeks ago. Go Mobile said it will eventually also support the handset geared towards business users. More new Apple products are expected to be available in Malta in the next few weeks, after last week's launch of a new line-up of notebook computers in the MacBook range.

"Apple has invented a whole new way of building notebooks from a single block of aluminum. And, just as important, they are the industry's greenest notebooks," said Mr Jobs. "The new MacBooks offer incredible features our users will love - like their stunning all-metal design, great 3D graphics and LED backlit displays - at prices up to $700 less than before."

When asked if Apple would get into the market for small "netbook" notebook computers, Mr Jobs said, "It's a nascent market," and that Apple would see how it went.

The new models have a new design and high-end specs, especially in terms of graphics. The new line of aluminium notebooks start at $1,299 (€1,010.42) in the US and the $999 (€777.07) price will be for an updated model of the white-body notebooks. The new aluminium machines will use Nvidia Corp. graphics and Intel Corp. processors. Apple also rolled out an $899 (€699.28) 24-inch wide display for the new MacBooks. Prices in Malta are expected to be higher due to shipping costs, VAT and eco tax.
