Chelsea skipper John Terry grabbed a 77th minute winner to put the Londoners three points clear in Group A after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Roma at Stamford Bridge while Liverpool had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon last night.
Elsewhere, Inter and Barcelona marched relentlessly towards a place in the last 16 after securing victories against Anorthosis Famagusta and Basel.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea manager Luis Felipe Scolari said beforehand he would be happy for his team to "win ugly" if necessary and that proved the recipe for his team as Roma defended in numbers and restricted the home side to few chances.
Terry's goal 13 minutes from time came from a near post header from a driven corner on the left by his England team-mate Frank Lampard.
Otherwise, neither side were able to carve out many clear-cut chances.
Girondins Bordeaux ended the unbeaten Champions League run of surprise package CFR Cluj with a 1-0 win over the Romanian side.
Cluj, who had started with a shock 2-1 win at Roma before holding Chelsea to a 0-0 draw in Romania, put up a brave fight until their captain, Cadu, deflected a Yoann Gourcuff cross into his own net on 54 minutes.
Simao Sabrosa scored a late equaliser to cancel out Robbie Keane's first-half strike as Atletico Madrid and Liverpool drew 1-1 in Group D.
Keane ran on to Steven Gerrard's sidefooted throughball on 14 minutes and slotted calmly past Leo Franco advancing from the Atletico goal.
With playmaker Sergio Aguero on the bench in the first period, Atletico were short of ideas, but his introduction after half-time gave the home side new impetus and brought the crowd at the Vicente Calderon to life.
Simao found space on the left just inside the box in the 83rd minute and his low shot beat goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
With three matches played, Liverpool and Atletico remain in control of the group on seven points each, PSV Eindhoven have three and Olympique Marseille none.
Brazilian Adriano headed in just before half-time to give a pedestrian Inter a 1-0 win over Anorthosis Famagusta and send the Italians clear at the top of Group B.
Maicon's right wing cross arrived slightly behind him and Adriano did well to arch his back and nod in from close range.
The Serie A champions, who hammered Roma 4-0 away at the weekend, were much more lethargic against the Cypriots and generally lacked creativity against a blanket defence.
In the other match from this group, a late goal from Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida secured Werder Bremen a 2-2 draw against Panathinaikos at the Olympic Stadium.
Almeida struck seven minutes from time to earn a point after the German side had fallen behind after taking the lead.
Bremen went ahead in the 29th minute against the run of play when defender Per Mertesacker got behind the defence to slip the ball past keeper Alexandros Tzorvas.
Vangelis Mantzios levelled seven minutes later when he sent a looping header over Werder keeper Christian Vander. Mantzios then added a second in the 68th minute but Almeida's strike left the Greek team still looking for their first win Barcelona demolished FC Basel 5-0 in Group C to put themselves on the brink of early qualification to the knockout stages.
Twice European champions Barcelona made it three wins out of three after dominating the first half with three well-worked goals from Lionel Messi, Sergi Busquets and Bojan Krkic.
Krkic continued the rout less than a minute after the restart, finishing off a neat counter to a rare Basel attack, with Xavi Hernandez getting on the scoresheet a minute later following another Messi lay-off.
Sporting beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 with a slick late goal from Brazilian striker Liedson.
The Portuguese side's hard-won victory, thanks to Liedson's low shot in the 76th minute, puts them in second place in the group, three points behind leaders Barcelona.
Fellow Brazilian Derlei managed a sly back-heel in the thick of the defence, allowing Liedson to swivel and shoot across the goal into the bottom far corner.
