Decision on temporary workers welcomed
The General Workers’ Union this afternoon urged the government to adopt into Maltese law, a decision taken by the European Parliament whereby temporary workers engaged by employment agencies would, from day one, enjoy the same rights as other workers engaged by their employer.
The union said this decision resolved a six-year impasse on a directive on temporary workers.
It had now been confirmed that temporary workers and regular employees in the same company would enjoy the same rights, even when the temporary workers worked abroad.

I urge the GWU not to encourage temporary workers to be employed by our firms here in Malta. Temporary worker are in effect modern slaves for industry. Industry uses these workers on a hire and fire basis. Just take a look to main land europe. The first to go are the temporary worker from firms all around Europe, since the financial downfall happening right now around the world. On the effect if they have the same rights as normal workers. in effect temporary workers remain 2nd class workers were they are engaged into firms.
On the other hand Malta is to small for employment agents to live of this market of modern slavery.
