MEPA has approved an extension of Pinto Wharf in Grand Harbour to provide better berthing facilities for large cruise liners.

The work, which is to be carried out this winter, will extend the quay by 40 metres to 300 metres through the removal of a ramp jutting out from the quay. The ramp was originally built for use by cargo ships (ro-ro) operations.

The development application was submitted by Viset, the cruise terminal operator.

An application for the dredging of a large section of the seabed off Barriera Wharf (fishmarket) for use by cruise liners was removed from the original proposal as it entails more studies, particularly related to the archaeological signifcance of the area.
