As from this year, the Swimming Section of the Aquatic Sports Association (ASA) will be awarding the best swimmers of the season in the various categories, while the club topping the standings according to a points system will be presented with a shield.

Prior to last Saturday's first-time trial of the new season, coach Andy Colbourn presented the cups and shield to the winners of 2007.

These were: Neil Agius (Open), Robert Micallef (Junior), Kyle Debattista (Cadets) and Davina Mangion (Open), Melinda Sue Micallef (Junior) and Nikki Muscat (Cadets).

The aggregate shield was won by Neptunes WPSC, coached by Gail Rizzo. The shield was presented to team captain Francesca Paolella.

Meanwhile, the ASA is introducing a waterpolo school for beginners. The programme is designed to give young swimmers a taste of the sport as well as the necessary skills to play the game.

The training schedule comprises two one-hour training sessions per week, spread over seven months.

The School Director is the national coach Sergio Afric.

Closing date for applications is November 10.
