Video: MCESD disagreement on utility tariffs persists - another meeting tomorrow
The MCESD is to hold a second meeting tomorrow to discuss the government's latest proposals on the water and electricity tariffs, the chairman of the council, Sonny Portelli said today.
The council held a two-hour meeting this morning, when it was briefed by Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt and Finance Minister Tonio Fenech.
The ministers did not comment after the meeting but representatives of some of the social partners said that while there appeared to be a willingness for consensus, no agreement had been reached.
The tariff proposals were announced earlier this month and ran into a wave of opposition from the private sector and trade unions, who argued that they would push up costs and could lead to unemployment.
The government has insisted it is not bound by the proposals, and it indicated that the new tariffs, which were originally to have come into force on October 1, could instead be introduced gradually over a two or three-year period especially for large enterprises which used to benefit from the capping on the surcharge.

I fully agree with the rise in prices because we Maltese have a mentality to waste things a few years of "faqar" would do as good or else we will never improve.
So go on make the electricity tariffs sky high prices so that we realize how much we waste!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And by the way the lidl supermarkets are making its customers spend more as we maltese like buy 1 get 1 free offers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gas is to increase to €14, nearly 200% increase.
How's that for a social conscience?

Hello!!! Are we aware that the price of oil has gone down substantially? Shall we continue to pay for the errors of Enemalta's wrong purchasing decision? This is one clear case, if ever there was one, in which the authorities should assist the mojority to ease the burden of additional and inflationary costs.

Kieki il malti jghid cikku waqa u kiser siequ!. Lets face facts now!
@Joseph Cassar
Qatt ma smajna xi businessman igerger. Forsi ma tkellmix man-nies ta' malta jew tkellem ma xi folla partikolari ta' businessman. Ara in-negozju kif sejjer. Jibku biex tixtri xi haga.
btw supermarket kullhadd irrid immur!
Looking at other countries i have never heard of such a high surcharge or high electricity /water tarrifs. (Always comparing proportionately to average salaries).
The rate of inflation is killing the country. This measure will cause dramatic harm!. Don't consider only the extra *bucks* you will pay when you receive the electricity bill, but also the extra you need to pay to cover the additonal 'business costs' jigifieri tal-hwienet, fabriki etc etc.
To consume less what has to be done...lets all switch off electricity/water main?..

The PN is very much aware of the national crisis we have and yet he wants to increase the electricity tariffs and the price of gas. This will put a heavy burden on maltese families and risk the failure of many maltese jobs. We are going to endure another time when we have to put the kettle on to take a shower or leave the car in the garage and go to work by foot or by bus.
What really amazes is that before March everything was pictured to us as plain sailing and now everything seems to turned upside down. those who are self employed already feel their sales decreasing and with the coming economy everything will slow down.
No matter what they say, we are to pass through dark ages again and it frightens me.

it looks that this government is getting worse and worse
all the groups in the MCESD are saying no to the government proposed measures but the government is still insisting on implementing them.
i think the problem is because the deficit is now out of the government's hand

the government must also take into consideration one other thing: consumers will be paying more than what is written on their electricity and water bill so the actual burden will be larger. This is due to the fact that an increase in electricity and water expenses for business will result in hidher prices.
Thus the miserable consumer will be paying a very expensive electricity and water bill plus purchasing daily products for a higher price!!!!
Sometimes I think that the government believes that our wallets are like an endless pit...you'll never reach the bottom. But believe me a lot of families have reached the bottom of their pit ages ago!

hi x-xewqa ta kullhadd li tinstab soluzzjoni accettabli ghas-setturi kollha. jidher li fl-MCESD hemm din ir-rieda. aktar ma jkun hemm konsensus bejn il-partijiet socjali,aktar hemm cans li neghlbu l-isfidi li ghandna quddiemna.l-izbalji li hadna fil-passat la huma skuza biex inzommuhom u l-anqas raguni biex nitrasferuhom f'oqsma ohra. chesterthon fl'orthodoxy jghid li jekk issib li ghall zmien twil kont qed taghti halib hazin lit-tarbija,int tibdel il-halib u mhux lit-tarbija(u l-halib hazin tarmih u mhux taghtieh lil trabi ohra) mela l-isfidi nafuhom,is-soluzzjonijiet madwar il-mejda ghad-diskussjoni,u filwaqt li l-partijiet socjali jridu jifmhu li kull spiza trid tintrefa minn xi hadd,il-gvern irid jifhem ukoll li l-governabbilita mhix biss it-tmexxija gurnata b'gurnata,izda timplika ukoll tibdil ghall ahjar ghall dawk kollha li jiddependu minnha.

This government is going again to bring us to our knees like we were in the 60s. Industry is already in deep trouble and PN is giving it another shock with the proposed new tariffs;

No doubt the effect of the tariffs on domestic use is v important. But nonetheless is that on businesses in general. The livelihood of business owners and their employees is at risk. Counter measures are required, reduction of : VAT, indirect taxes, or introduction of tax incentivisation measures are a few examples. Eg. restaurants pay 18% on sales but since they do not pay VAT on food purchases, they cannot claim back anything; end result is a straight payment of 18% VAT to Govt, so this taxes total turnover NOT profit margin. PLUS income tax, plus employment contributions,
