Glenn Bedingfield is the first candidate to submit his nomination for Friday's casual election for the European Parliament.

The election is being held to fill the seat vacated by Joseph Muscat, who resigned from the European Parliament to become Opposition Leader.

Of the unelected Labour candidates at the last election in 2004, Mr Bedingfield was the closest to gaining a seat and he is now seen as a favourite to serve out the remaining eight months of the EP term.

The election can be contested by Joe Debono Grech, Wenzu Mintoff, Robert Micallef and Owen Bonnici, although Dr Bonnici has already ruled himself out.

Nominations will be received until tomorrow at noon.
