Joseph Muscat plans to work towards bridging the divide which he feels is growing between national institutions and ordinary citizens.
Dr Muscat, having recently been sworn in as Opposition Leader, was speaking during a courtesy call yesterday morning on the President, when he conveyed the opposition's respect for President Eddie Fenech Adami, both in his individual and official capacities.
He pledged to be a positive and constructive force in the country.
While working hand in hand with the government, he would also be harshly critical of the government on issues he disagreed with, as required in a true democracy.
Dr Fenech Adami said that in the past the country was too politically polarised and he welcomed the tone of Dr Muscat's speeches, which he felt had not taken such a stance.
Dr Muscat also called on the Speaker, where he said that Parliament had to be relevant to society by discussing issues of relevance and coming up with concrete solutions.
