During July and August there was a drop of 8.1 per cent over the same period last year in the number of people calling at the Mater Dei Hospital emergency department, Social Policy Minister John Dalli told Anthony Agius Decelis (MLP) in reply to a parliamentary question yesterday.

There were 10,177 cases in July, a drop of 968 from July last year, and 9,839 cases in August, a drop of 660.

Mr Dalli said the campaign to make people aware that the emergency department was intended only for serious cases cost €20,640.
