Glenn Bedingfield this morning became the first candidate to submit his nomination for the casual election for the European Parliament.

The election will elect a successor to Joseph Muscat.

Mr Bedignfield had been the closest of the Labour candidates to miss being elected when the elections were held in 2004, and he is seen as favourite to inherit the seat and serve the remaining eight months of the EP term.

Nominations continue to be received until tomorrow at noon. The election will be held on Friday.
