Marco Gerada is no longer the coach of Ħamrun Spartans after handing his resignation during a meeting he had with the Premier League club's top officials yesterday.

Gerada had been at the helm since the start of season 2007-08 when he replaced Atanas Marinov. In his first year in charge, the former St George's coach helped the newly-promoted Spartans to retain their status in the Premier League and led them to the Championship Pool. Last May, the Spartans also reached the final of the FA Trophy but lost to Birkirkara 2-1.

After the departure of club's chief goalscorer Alfred Effiong in the summer, the Spartans have struggled to repeat last season's bright performances and are still in search of their first win after seven matches. Ħamrun, who lost to Msida St Joseph 3-2 last Saturday, are bottom of the table with only two points.
