As a human need or as an artistic expression, the burning of wood is as primitive as it is enduring. To our ancestors, it was a means of light, a weapon, or a divine manifestation.

Pyrography is the art of burning an image onto a surface, usually timber or leather. The word “pyro” is derived from the ancient Greek word for fire, whereas “graph” signifies art or writing. The art of pyrography used to be known as pokerwork for the reason that a red hot “poker” from the fire was used to mark pieces of leather or timber. Today, the pyrography iron or wood burner is used. This machine is powered by electricity and allows the artist to create a variety of shapes and designs in a unique manner.

Less of a need and more of a means of inner expression, the burning of wood has today taken on a more artistic mould. In its artistic form known as pyrography, Philippa Darmanin has found a medium in which to vent her artistic talent and attention to form and colour. An eclectic mesh of design and collage, her creations give life to wood panels in a truly fascinating and versatile manner.

Ms Darmanin has created a niche art which is inspired in many ways by her love for expressionism and design. Having spent a number of years working on the suppleness of fabrics, Philippa has moved into the more solid world of pyrography. Her ability to exploit new techniques and tools in an original and artistic manner enlightens the atmosphere of any living space.

The first exhibition of this unique work entitled Pyromania is at Malata, Palace Square, Valletta. More information may be obtained by e-mail philda@waldonet.net.mt
