This month, the Malta Rugby League (MRL) will have Jarrod Sammut assisting them with the development of the sport on the islands. Sammut, 21, has made four international appearances for the country since his debut in 2006.

MRL Operations Manager Anthony Micallef said: "Jarrod is a specially talented individual with lots of Rugby League knowledge... it is outstanding that Maltese players have the opportunity to learn from such a professional."

In 2008, the livewire half-back played 11 games and scored 70 points for the Penrith Panthers in Australia's elite NRL competition.

"The reason Malta couldn't take part in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup is that we don't have a domestic league," Sammut said.

"With the right development in place, we can figure in qualifying in future."
