The Water Services Corporation has 134 boreholes, 90 in Malta and 44 in Gozo, from which it raises drinking water.

The output from each borehole is very close to the nominal output established by a scientific exercise.

Answering a parliamentary question by Marlene Pullicino (MLP), Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt said the water being pumped up was put into reservoirs and mixed with the output of reverse osmosis plant before being distributed to consumers.

Aquifer water accounted for 46 per cent of water distributed in Malta and Gozo.
