A man was yesterday jailed for two-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to trafficking heroin.

Paul Cuschieri, 39, from Senglea, pleaded guilty to possessing 11 sachets of heroin which he intended to sell.

The case was heard before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera. Lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for the accused.

During a separate arraignment, 24-year-old Eman Cassar from Cospicua pleaded not guilty to trafficking heroin.

He also pleaded not guilty to being in possession of ammunition without a licence and committing a crime during the operative term of a suspended jail term.

The court heard how drug squad police arrested the defendant who was caught in possession of one sachet of heroin. Subsequent searches at his home yielded a total of 235 grams of heroin as well as an undisclosed amount of cash.

Magistrate Scerri Herrera denied his request for bail and remanded him in custody. Police Inspector Norbert Ciappara prosecuted while lawyer Anġlu Farrugia appeared for the defendant.
