Karl Chircop has just been called to enjoy the presence of the Lord following an examplary life based on Christian values.
When a person like Dr Chircop passes away at such a young age this generally presents an opportunity for one to reflect on certain realities.
This world is not our homeland but we are on a journey leading to the heavenly home as long as we choose values that make us worthy of heaven.
It is up to us to try to familiarise ourselves with this truth. To know the Gospel - for instance - is to get into a relationship with Jesus Christ, the light of the world. To live His teachings is to live a fulfilled life with the joy that results from inner peace which surpasses any suffering one may experience. "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" - Matthew 11:30 .
In this context the issue of divorce - inter alia - can be soundly addressed. Life based on Christian values benefits not only Christians but society at large. If a couple decides to marry after spending quality time together and after working at becoming best friends, romance can grow into altruistic love. This makes a lasting relationship possible particularly if this is strengthened by a permanent partnership with Jesus Christ who instituted this sacrament of marriage. When the divine love of Jesus Christ is fully discovered no Catholic person thinks of saying: "Hey Jesus I love you and I love to receive you but when it comes to the permanence of marriage and to alleviating hardships of failed marriages, you are not competent enough to advise and guide us. We prefer a worldly legal advice in these matters."
However - whether consciously or subconsciously- this is the message which is put across by Catholics who support divorce. Of course couples and families facing problems deserve every support and solidarity but divorce is not a solution. Banks can collapse, worldly possessions can be lost but if we build our houses on solid rock - the word of God - nothing will destroy them.
It is with gratitude that we thank God for personalities like Dr Chircop who, guided by the Holy Spirit, inspire us when we are faced with daily choices. Discovering the beauty of living the teachings of Jesus Christ is to discover the secret of peace of mind and real joy. This is a legacy Karl bequeathed to his family and to the people until we meet again. Nothing shall be lacking to those who fear the Lord: "I am the Truth, discover me in the light of my Word, search me in the Holy Scriptures, meet me in the Gospels, know me, the Truth, and I will set you free."
