Shooter Clive Farrugia is well placed to challenge for a medal as he was fifth at the end of the opening day of the skeet competition at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India yesterday.
Farrugia, a gold medallist at the European Commonwealth Championships held in Gibraltar last month, started his participation with a modest score of 20 from 25 clays in the opening round.
However, he soon rediscovered his best form, hitting scores of 24 and 23 in the subsequent rounds to finish the day fifth with a tally of 67, just one behind third-placed Ben Wilson, of Scotland.
Cyprus's Georgios Kazakos is leading the field on 71 ahead of Briton Rory Warlow who has 69.
The competition resumes today with the final two rounds from the preliminary stage, with the top six shooters qualifying for the final barrage.
Charlot Chircop was the other Maltese shooter in action yesterday when he took part in the 10m air rifle competition.
Chircop finished ninth overall with 527 points. England's James Huckle took gold with 685.7 ahead of Singapore's Wan Tianchong (678.1) and Canada's Michael Goodchild (677.1).
