I refer to the letter by the chairman of the Housing Authority (Property Prices And Social Housing, October 15) and to the controversy which has erupted over the comments we made. Our proposal is very simple and in no way is it anti-social as it has been described.

The government has declared that it is appropriating €20 million to build 300 residential units. These units would cost the government €70,000.

We can assure everyone that the private sector is in a position to offer this amount of residential units and more at that price. Moreover, the private sector is prepared to consider other forms of arrangements with the government such as part ownership and part ground rent, to enable it to reach more families requiring social housing.

Should the government take up our suggestion this would mean the following advantages for the public:

• These units will be available immediately and there would be no waiting time for those who are in desperate need of social housing.

• The government is guaranteed not to overspend on its allocated budget.

• Land earmarked for development by the government will remain available to the public for future use.

We hope that the above clears any misunderstandings that may have arisen and it shows that our proposal is sound and that it is in the interest of everybody.
