About a year or so ago, works were being done all the way on the road leading from Bir id-Deheb to Birżebbuġa. Looking at all other roadworks done over the island, this job was quite efficient, taking into consideration the amount of work there had to be done. But the end result was not satisfactory at all. The road was only half properly done, while other parts were left as they originally were, with potholes and uneven surfaces throughout.

It's ridiculous to have roads like this on our island, where the longest roads barely stretch for a distance of 3km! Is it such a difficult job to asphalt all the way to the end...or is it a matter of finances? Why do we pay our taxes? Why do we pay to have our cars tested every two years?

Ninety per cent of damage done to our cars is due to the horrendous states of our roads. Is this a "European standard" or is this the way it should be? On another note, there are two other roads in Birżebbuġa where, when rain falls for longer than five minutes, you'd better get your boat and oars ready to cross! The roads in question are Triq taż-Żibra and the surrounding intersecting roads, and most especially Triq Birżebbuġa. The latter had some maintenance done on it last summer and believe me, if you were to drive on the moon you would get a better ride than driving through this road, especially when it rains. You'll find yourself playing minesweeper, trying to guess where the next pothole is going to be.

I am not pointing fingers at anybody here. I don't know if it concerns the local council, the roads department or whoever, but please take a stand on these situations because it is going to be very dangerous in winter time. If we want to act as Europeans, let's do things the way European way.
