I refer to the letter by Jozef Cini, entitled Discrimination Against the Elderly? (October 13).

If Mr Cini is a regular reader of The Times he must have noticed that the advert issued by the Department of Examinations he referred to was immediately substituted by another advert in the following days, which advertised the same vacancies but leaving out the age limit.

The correspondent should know that it was Dolores Cristina, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport who, after seeing the advert in the press, which was not forwarded to the ministry before it was published, immediately ordered the cancellation of the advert to be replaced by another one accepting people over 62 years of age to fill these vacancies.

In fact, a number of persons over 62 years have now applied and their application is being considered with others. The ministry apologises for any inconvenience caused and states that as far as it is concerned any form of discrimination is unacceptable.
