Speaker upholds privilege case by Alfred Sant
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Louis Galea, this evening upheld, prima facie, a breach of privilege complaint raised yesterday by former Labour leader Alfred Sant against IT Minister Austin Gatt.
Dr Sant had denied claims made by Dr Gatt in Parliament that he had information about the MITTS hacking inquiry and had tried to spin the story to a newspaper so as to mislead investigations.
Dr Galea referred the case to the Privileges Committee of the House of Representatives for its consideration.

I repeat for the 100th time, that I am one of the many (& I repeat MANY) others fed up of contributing to the salaries of irresponsible and arrogant people this like. Sorry but the high taxes I pay each and every month could be invested much better!!!! About time some people are asked to resign from their position as the salary they are receiving is just money down the drain!!!!!

May I just add the following info that has just made the headlines: "French President Nicolas Sarkozy is taking legal action for libel and invasion of privacy against the former head of a French intelligence agency." Dr Sant is obviously on the right track. I reckon we'll soon see his case making it to the proper EU quarters. How will the almighty Gatt react to that? Does he have the guts to advance the Cairo connection?

I completely agree with N. Farrugia. People across the board are warming up to the idea of demonstrating, massively and effectively, against the dictatorial actions of the Gonzi-Gatt combo leadership and malgovernance of the country. The way Indian Austin is treating the former Leader of the Opposition betrays his disregard and utter disrespect for the rule of law. Such an attitude behove deeper contempt for the sovereignty of the Maltese people more than half of which are not adequately and fittingly represented as it is. All that is needed is a spark and the keg will blow up. The present Government should be aware of the situation and rein in its (not so easily) controllable elements (or element) meaning Indian Austin. Cairo Embassy my foot!

May I agree with C.Attard. The PN, thanks mostly to Austin Gatt, as tolerated or abetted by Lawrence Gonzi are making a complete mess of local politics. It is really a shame. Under Mintoff and Fenech Adami politics had class, now it's losing all its lustre. Gonzi should be more responsible and either rein in Austin (Indiana Jones) Gatt or else call fresh elections. Everything is getting out of hand and if Gatt is allowed to have his way we will soon be the first EU state to either suffer a coup (the people are increasingly becoming inclined to the idea) or declare martial law. Believe you me, I am not exaggerating. Just feel the pulse of the nation at the moment.

can we have someone in this country that can carry political responsability ?
always keep in mind that national entities should be run as a private company and when something happens like this , the private sector will chop heads off .
Always keep in mind that these entities are run by our taxes

What is this 'Prima Facie', is this Malta or Italy. Surely it can be said in Maltese.

@Paul Farrugia. What's the style of a good politician then? One who doesn't irk anybody, but doesn't get results?

Back around 1996, Austin Gatt called Alfred Sant a liar. Sant took him to court and Austin lost it and made a fool of himself. This time he made a bigger fool of himself.
Take a pill Austin, and calm down.

The PN is turning local politics into a complete mess. Yes, the Prime Minister should intervene and stop all this hassle by Austin Gatt!
MITTS is a governmental agency and someone from t the government needs to speak out seriously. Gonzi can no longer wash his hands of this case like he's trying to do with the w&e tariffs, it's surely not a mere coincidence that only labour's members were those most heavily affected!!!

It's about time the PM himself reins in the bull-dozing and irritating style of Austin Gatt. He does get results but on the way to achieving them he has a tendency to irritate and irk anybody who does not agree with him. That's not the style of a good politician.
