Elderly woman held up at home
A 77-year-old woman suffered the shock of her life last night when four men barged into her home in Xaghra, Gozo, demanded cash, and ran off with less than €400.
The case happened in Guzeppi Bajada Street at about 1.15 a.m.
No one was injured but the woman is being treated for shock.
A magisterial inquiry is under way.

Although I fully understand Mr J Tonna, it is these comments that should worry all Maltese.
Malta has always been known as a safe country, and although there has been more crime recently, we should not end up locking ourselves up when it gets dark.
This only proves that people do not feel protected !!!!

Everyone is prone to such attacks, especially elderly people who are more vulnerable. Therefore the authorities should give instructions on what to do, especially when alone in the house. TV or radio programmes should expand on this too.
I and my wife are elderly persons too and as soon as we see the sun settling down, thus getting dark, we close the door, lock it from inside and it will not be opened before the sun rises in the morning. Our children have been warned that should they need us after darkness falls, they should first phone us. If unable to do so we have agreed on a code how to knock.
If, for instance, someone knocks after we have locked the door, we go to the balcony, check if we know the person who is calling on us at that time and if we do not know him/her we will not open for any reason whatsoever. We have even told callers that we do not open the door after it gets dark. We have even turned away political persons who like to call at that time (after giving an explanation), and they always understand us.

We should be taking more care of our elderly. If we know someone living next door is vulnerable then we should ensure that they have double locks and chains on their doors so that intruders will find it more difficult to barge in.

Wish I knew who they were.......just heard stories from a particular area in Xaghra. Basically, this is happening regularly. A gang barges in during the night or while these poor old people go to mass in the early hours of the morning.

I really can't understand this. Everybody knows who these people are, even the police know. Xaghra had several similar cases over the last 3 years, and nothing has been done about it. What on earth are the police doing? People are reporting who these people are, and the police simply ignoring them.

Thankfully in this incident no one was reportedly physically hurt. However the mental damage of invasion of ones home by an individual or as in this case a gang, is incalculable.
I do hope that these cowards are caught and very severely punished without mercy. There is absolutely no excuse for this type of crime and they have no place in society.
