I refer to Joseph Stafrace’s letter titled Fourfold Rise In Fee For Skolasport, (October 13).
The Malta Sports Council would like to point out that the letter contained very misleading and false accusations.
SkolaSport is a sports programme that starts this Saturday, and ends in May with a total of 28 one-and-a-half-hour weekly sessions, 42 hours in total.
Last year the fee was Lm20 which is equivalent to €46.58.
This year the price was rounded down to €46, equivalent to €1.09 per hour.
When considering that the fee covers the expense of coaching, equipment and facilities for 42 sessions, not only is the price not a fourfold increase but it is very cheap. The council strives to attract more children and youngsters to adopt a healthy and sportive lifestyle.
It is determined to make a difference by introducing various sports disciplines and exercise in general to children, even by subsidising the rates that should be paid.
