Divorce debate on TV
I watched the divorce debate on Xarabank last Friday. People from many walks of life took part and voiced their arguments in favour or against divorce.
However, no one can deny that the most convincing of them all was Fr Anton Gouder. He clearly showed how divorce can do more harm than good to our families and also to our beloved Catholic Malta.

@M.Porter
That is exactly the point dear sir!! True-to-the-faith Catholics do not need prohibitive laws to divorce because if this goes against their faith they won't.
However Malta is also made up of expired catholics, athiests, don't care catholics, non catholics etc and the law must offer them the right to divorce.
Remember our country is still a soverign EU nation not a Vatican satellite state.

Never have I seen the faith of the Maltese so low! Are you really catholics? A true catholic says no to divorce no matter what. A non catholic is indifferent.

You are totally wrong about the Church and payment for annulment. Annulment is open to everyone and it is their application that is looked into and not their bank account.

One question: where in the gospels is annulment mentioned? the answer is simple. annulment was invented by the church to cater for those individuals who were in a position to pay. The same with purgatory.

Is that how it struck you? I was more interested in the difference in opinion between the Rev. Gouder and Rev Serracino Inglott.

After someone in the panel said that wives of violent husbands should be given another chance and be allowed to re-marry, Fr Gouder replied with the following question: "So should we give the wife-beater another chance to beat up other women?"
I was very much surprised that no one in the panel was prepared enough to give the obvious reply to Fr Gouder's question: "We have the police and the law to deal with such people and to make sure that the wife-beater does not beat up anyone else".
I quickly grabbed the TV remote and watched a more instructive program on a comedy channel.

I liked the contribution of Mr Charles (Azzoppardi?) and did not like the way Georg Sapiano twisted Fr Gouder's words in his favour , surely he is not the type of PN candidate I like.
BTW : the young girl who said that she is fervently Catholic and would keep the marriage even if she was beaten by her future husband, was unconvincing.

How do these priests get into everything in Maltese life? Every paper every day; TV, radio you name it. Do you get little priests in your corn flakes packet as well? They call themselves fathers, yet are not supposed to father any children, or marry, or have sex with a woman. They are no one's father!
So, what can they teach us about the almighty drive that attracts/binds man to woman; or the emotional cataclysms that tear them and/or families apart? They read books? Well, real life is not a book.
They should get off the case. We know their opinion and it is NEVER going to change; so why bother? The people who were ever going to listen to them know their opinion only too well; and the people who weren't just get angrier and more nauseated with their arguments.

Nonsense.
I think never has a Xarabank programme been so convincing that divorce should be legalised.
As for Fr. Gouder, he was well below par given his usual performances to date.

Sorry, I absolutely disagree. Gouder was by far the least convincing of the lot. He claimed that divorce does more harm than good but failed to give any reasons why, and failed to address the many counter arguments presented. He threatened all politicians using their faith as a weapon, then denied doing so. Even Fr. Serracino Inglott disagreed with him.
Fr. Gouder STATED, not showed, that divorce can do more harm than good.
