Nine loggerhead turtles that had been in rehabilitation for the last few months, were released back into the sea this morning in the presence of students from the Ekoskola Programme.

The turtles were rescued by members of the Nature Trust (Malta) Rescue team.

Most had swallowed hooks, nylon lines or plastic bags - bags are often mistaken for jelly fish. Others had suffered propeller injuries from boats.

Once rescued, the turtles were medicated at the San Lucjan Centre, run by the Fisheries Department at Marsaxlokk.

Resources Minister George Pullicino this morning joined the children to witness the release of the turtles.

Nature Trust appealed to the public to report any injured turtles sighted out at sea so that immediate action can be taken to save these creatures.
