Mitts silent on Sant's claims
Mitts, the government agency at the centre of an investigation yesterday avoided questions by The Times, saying only that Minister Austin Gatt would be making a ministerial statement on the matter in Parliament today.
Mitts chairman Claudio Grech yesterday would not respond to the statement by former Labour leader Alfred Sant that a complaint he had lodged with the IT agency about his e-mail being tampered went unanswered for a year.
In response to several questions posed by The Times yesterday, Mitts said it had nothing to add except that Minister Austin Gatt would be making a ministerial statement in Parliament today on the matter.
In the wake of investigations involving employees at the government IT agency, Mr Grech last week dismissed the notion that the police were investigating the hacking of e-mail accounts belonging to top Labour MPs, including the former Opposition leader Alfred Sant.
He also said that no complaints about hacking were ever received about the matter but in comments to Maltatoday this Sunday, Dr Sant said he had made a complaint about the matter himself last September.
It is still unclear what the police investigation, which is believed to involve Mitts employees, involves. The government-owned company manages the government's internet network and all e-mails ending with gov.mt.
Last Friday, responding to a letter sent by Dr Sant asking for a clarification on the investigations, Mr Grech explained that at the beginning of September, Mitts had asked the Police Commissioner to investigate a suspected breach of internal policies and procedures by one or more technical members of its staff.
These suspected breaches were not related to unauthorised access, or the tampering with any e-mail accounts, as Maltatoday had previously claimed, he had said.
