I refer to the letter by Joseph Cordina under the heading Mud And Filth In Ħamrun (September 30).
The Ħamrun local council has been aware of the situation in Roger Debattista Street c/w Tramm Street, Ħamrun since the first rainfall following the surfacing of Roger Debattista Street by the Malta Transport Authority. To this effect the council had written to the director of the Networks Infrastructure Directorate on January 8, 2008 to report the difference in levels between the two roads and investigate whether surfacing works were carried out properly. Since works were contracted by the Malta Transport Authority, the council requested that they instruct the responsible contactor to rectify the situation.
Unfortunately, although the authority spent thousands of euro on the surfacing of these roads and the works were still covered by the defects liability period, it seems that it took no action to remedy the situation.
As regards the dog excrement mentioned by Mr Cordina, regrettably this is a problem encountered in various streets of Ħamrun. Consequently the council is working collectively with local wardens to attempt to curtail this great inconvenience caused by irresponsible dog owners. Notwithstanding, residents may still report such infringements to the local police.
