I wrote to this newspaper earlier this year expressing my concern about the quality of the assistance for people with restricted mobility at Malta International Airport.

My husband and I have just returned to the UK from our latest visit to Malta and I am delighted to be able to say that the service has improved beyond recognition.

The people we came into contact with (both on arrival and departure) including the staff on the information desk, the gentlemen who bought me a wheelchair and pushed me through to departures and on to the ambulift and then on to the plane were cheerful, friendly and very considerate of my needs. All in all, a very professional operation.

Everyone involved in the service is to be commended for providing first-class assistance for what can be a sensitive issue - after all, those of us who need this service wish we didn't.

I would add that after my previous letter, I was contacted by Simon Sultana of Malta International Airport who apologised for the problems we had faced previously and he assured me that the situation would be much improved on my return to Malta in the autumn.

How right he was. Well done Mr Sultana and all of your team and thank you for a stress-free arrival and departure.

I'm glad to say that Malta International Airport is now back on the top of our league of airports for special needs assistance.
