Parliament pays glowing tribute to Karl Chircop

The House of Representatives this evening heard moving tributes to Labour MP Karl Chircop, who passed away yesterday, aged 43.

Flowers and a large picture were placed on the seat usually occupied by Dr Chircop as the Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition led the tributes to the MP of 12 years.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this was a moment of profound sadness for the House. All had been shocked when Dr Chircop fell ill and the country had united in its hopes and prayers for a recovery. The country was now united in mourning for a man who despite being young, had contributed to the progress of this country.

Dr Gonzi recalled that when he was Social Policy Minister in 1998, Dr Chircop was shadow minister. Their debates, he said, were occasionally tough but Dr Chircop was "elegant in his delivery of an argument despite being tough".

Dr Chircop always believed in what he said. He was dedicated to his values and used those values in the service of his country. He viewed politics as an instrument to serve the people.

Clearly he was always in close contact with the people, not least because he was a family doctor. He also respected his political opponents and differing views.

“His was a substantial and substantive contribution to the country” Dr Gonzi said. He hoped that Dr Chircop’s family would draw comfort from this as they mourned a dear husband and father.

Dr Gonzi expressed his condolences to the family on behalf of the government.

Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat said this was a loss for the country, the MLP and his parliamentary colleagues.

The country had lost a worthy representative of the people, a person who, like many on both sides of the House, put the interests of the people and the nation before anything else.

The MLP had lost a loyal worker who respected the party’s ideals. Karl grew up in a worker’s family and never forgot his roots.

He had personally lost a friend with whom he had shared ups and downs.

Dr Chircop was a person who was frank in his views. He was not a yes man and would make his views known, even if they were unpalatable for some.

Dr Muscat said Dr Chircop had taken up his task as shadow minister for health with enthusiasm.

However there were two memories which were particularly enduring. The first was that despite his packed diary, Dr Chircop always found time for his family. The second was the donation of his organs. His wife Adriana had told him she was sure that would have been Dr Chircop's wish. He, therefore, was of service to others to the very end.

This should serve as an example to encourage organ donations which would give new hope to other people.

Dr Muscat also paid tribute to Dr Chircop’s mother Marion, who first lost her husband and now her son, practically in the same manner.

Dr Muscat on behalf of the family thanked Parliamentary Secretary Joe Cassar who had always been close to the family and had done his best to help.

He also expressed condolences to the family on behalf of the opposition.

The Speaker, Louis Galea, referred to the many tributes by individuals and organisations and said they were all well deserved. As an MP, Dr Chircop was always well prepared. He grasped the details of an argument and had worked effectively to improve legislation. He had practiced the vocation of a politician with success. He was an example of honesty ,integrity and loyalty which should be mirrored by everyone.

The House then observed a minute's silence and adjourned as a mark of respect.

Earlier today, the Labour Party said it had opened a book of condolence for Dr Chircop.

The members of the Labour parliamentary group led by Opposition leader Joseph Muscat, were the first to sign the book in the foyer of Labour HQ this afternoon.

The book will be open to the public between tomorrow and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The parliamentary group observed a minute’s silence for Dr Chircop at the start of a meeting this afternoon. It also expressed its solidarity with his widow Adriana and their children Jan, Francesca, Christian and Keith, his mother Marion and the rest of the family.

Flags on party clubs are to fly at half mast till Wednesday.

God looked around his Garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
And knew that you would never get well on earth again.
He saw your path was difficult, he closed you tired eyes, You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide,
You live on through your children, .
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you on the day God called you home

There is not much to add to the eulogies already posted hereunder. Notwithstanding the seriousness of Dr Karl’s condition, we all hoped for a recovery and his loss still came as a shock. We will deeply miss Dr Karl, a great gentleman characterized by interminable kindness, integrity and humour, a fine doctor and even finer friend, whom we feel lucky to have known and spent time with during his all too brief life. Our condolences go to all his family. May wonderful memories of Karl sustain them throughout these hard times and may they find solace in the knowledge of his love for them. – David & Tania

Stop All the Clocks - W.H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
David Meilak (on 14/10/08)
I have a picture on my desk from way back in 1980/81 when our 6th form class which included Karl went on a hike/picnic in Bidnija. They were good times and bad times as Karl had lost his father at that time. I remember being shocked at school when Karl's father had passed away so untimely. Again the loss of Karl at practically the same age as his father is very tragic to us all. During those turbulent political times of 1981 Karl and I used to discuss the political situation quite frequently from different political perspectives, and although we did not always see eye to eye regarding what was going on at that time I do remember Karl the the type to call a spade a spade and did not mince his words.
Fond times remembered by your old fellow students, and sorrow that as many others have mentioned losing Karl is a National loss, a Doctor, a friend, a father, a husband and a rare breed of politician.

I only met Dr. Chirchop once in my life. This was on Saturday, the day before the incident which ultimatly ended his life. He was about to board the Gozo ferry and when I informed him that we were expecting him, being a V.I.P. he smiled a sincere smile of appreciation. We talked for a few minutes and I was immediantly struck by his respect for the common man and real interest he took in whatever was a concern to others. Even if I didn't know him personnally I was praying everyday for his well being and I was really saddened when I heard of his death. May the Lord give strenght to his family and please Karl pray for us from the better place you are surely in now.

It is but natural that the death of Karl Chircop, a benevolent gentleman at the early age of 43 should case grief. His valuable qualities of character has been well known to one and all at Hal Far. Traits of character such as intelligence, patience, quickness of grasp and readiness to help others which he showed as active member of the youth movement of the Peace Lab and during his subsequent public career deserve emulation.
Joseph Ellul (on 14/10/08)
May God keep his hands of Karl's Family in this trying time. May God give you the prize you deserve for being such a good Husband, Father and people servant to the fullest.

Karl, you died as you lived. The last time I saw you was at ITU at Mater Dei. You could not speak. Yet your silence speaks. You'll continue to live in those who will live because of your organ donations. You gave an example not by words but action. And that's the way all of us who came to know you remember you: your smile, your tender loving care, your dedication to your family and to the Ideals we share. Yes, Karl you will not walk alone...In your silence you'll continue to talk. Moviment Era Gdida, your friends... we will not forget you. Please, Karl, pray for us to remain faithful to the values you worked so hard to instill in us. Untill we meet again.

Goodbye Karl, I will fondly remember the rare times we met by chance in Malta and would get so absorbed in our chats that you would invariably suddenly run off - late for some appointment.
Malta lost a gentleman but above all your family lost a great husband, father, son, and brother.
My sincere and deepest condolences.

Dear Adriana..Karl took care of my Dad (76) and mum (71) when he was alive. That is how I knew him. He was always there for them, no time, no limit. I guess he took care of everyone he knew and anyone who needed his services. No words can console you at this sad times. We were all lucky in our own ways having Karl around. Dear Karl, take care of us all from up there. We feel lost and helpless and empty. As you always did, please give us the right medicine to comfort our sad hearts.

We've lost a true politician, a doctor, a fellow Red but most of all an honest gentleman! May God be with his family in this difficult time!

Dr. Chircop was one of the few politicians who put a smile to politics' face, a pleasure to watch and listen to, even in the hottest of debates, himself convinced that what he was saying was for the good of society, more then trying to win the argument.

He will be sadly missed in every sphere of life he was into.
Geraldine Rickard (on 13/10/08)
We have lost a great family doctor, a friend, but most of all a gentleman. You always found time to listen to our problems, play with our young daughter and even pat our cat! You will surely be missed Dr Chricop.

Rest in peace Karl.

Tributes galore for a family man and a dedicated medical practitioner who was kind hearted and did a lot for his patients. But Karl deserves a lot more. Malta is united in its tributes, but Karl deserves to be remembered by future generations.
I appeal to the Gudja or St. Lucija Local Councils to name a street for this ultra-honest politician so that his ideals will last longer than the tributes being showered on him at this stage.
Condolences to his close family members and friends.

Even in death Karl is still helping his fellow human beings. The recipients of karl's organs will ensure that he lives on in them while the memories left behind will prevent him dying in the hearts of all those who were lucky to know him. Even while I write these words the screen blurs through the tears.

The Dash [2]

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile...
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash...
would you be proud of the things they
say about how you spend your dash?

Dear Karl, you have fulfilled your dash!

Henry Mifsud (on 13/10/08)

I met Karl a couple of years ago, though briefly, through Adriana when we were on a lovely holiday together with our respective families and children; even though I knew his sister Marisa long before. The following poem might express what at the moment I fail to say:

The Dash [1]

(copyright 1996 Linda Ellis)

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth...
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars....the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard...
are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

Karl your departing may have been a shock to all of us especially to those who have known you not only as a close family doctor, but through our family ties since childhood...., we still remember the loss of your father as if it were yesterday... same void and distress... but now you are beside him may GOD grant you eternal rest .... you will always remain in our thoughts and a thank you would never be enough......

Sincere condolences to Adriana and all the family.

I am not a Labour ... neither a Liverpool supporter; but what does it matter in times like these when the country has lost one of its finest and a family has lost its daddy? I truly admired you Karl and in the 2 or 3 times I met you I was always struck by your humility, sincereity and apparent peace at heart. The only consolation is that you are now in a better place, whilst physically you will hopefully still live on through the noble and altruistic initiative of your bereaved family. May God grant them comfort, and you, the prize that you surely deserve.

Not how did he die, but how did he live?
Not what did he gained, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away.

Thanks for being a great doctor, politician, and a friend to our family. RIP and take care of your family from above.

I do not know Dr. Chircop but from what i heard he would surely go out of his way to HELP.

Now i read that he was a RED, a LIVERPOOL MAN like me.

How many times have we heard the song, OUR SONG - You Never Walk Alone - This means everything for a Liverpool Supporter even if no Trophy would have been won.

We know how the stadium, Anflied was last year in May when a Kid 14years old lost his battle with stomach cancer how supportive they were before the Champions League Semi Final and by hearing the song how it goes into you. I am sure how Dr. Chircop would have felt about it.

Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain

A great lose for Malta. Karl was a charismatic and affable person who has always worked towards best for our country. I knew Karl in several political activities and media productions we were both involved in. His gentle smile used to reflect his honestly and the positive attitude which he has always thought off.

My condolences go to his wife, his four kids and family.

Rest in Peace Karl.

May God bless his family in this difficult time. As a journalist I knew Karl and I can only say that he was an honest politician, with a strong drive to help people in need.
Joseph Abela (on 13/10/08)
I got to know Carl Chircop in 1996, when we were both elected for the first time in the House of Representative. It was an exciting time for both of us and for all those who were elected in that legislature. First of all, that was because the Labour Party, under the leadership of Dr. Alfred Sant, returned to the government benches after almost a decade in oppostion. Secondly it was our first experience in Parliament. I still remeber Carl anxious waiting for his time, eager to speak in the adjournament. Throughout my experience in Parliament and outside Carl was always balanced, calm and always available. He was available for his constituents and he never switched off his mobile phone even during his speeches in parliament. He was available for the Labour Party and for our country. We lost a true friend and a hard worker.
Charles Zerafa (on 13/10/08)
A great loss of an honourable man and a true politician.

May Karl's approach of doing things both in his professional life as well as in politics will serve as an example to others.

My deepest sympathy to his wife Adriana, his four children as well as his mother.

Karl, 'You'll never walk alone'.

Our country has lost a truly honest and able MD and MP. Condolences to all his family. I'm a PN supporter, but Dr. Chircop was only one of a few whom I wished in my party. A real great loss for his family and our country.

When you walk, through the storm
Hold you head up high
And don't be afraid , Of the dark
At the end of the storm, is a golden sky
And sweet silver song of our love
Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed
And walk,
Oh, walk on (walk on)

Walk on(walk on)
With hope in your heart

A great loss not only for the Malta Labour Party but also for the whole country. I have worked closely with Karl through parliament reporting, and I can say that he was always fully prepared before every speech he did. The short line your wrote means a lot. Dr. Karl Chircop will remain a beacon to us, even in his death. As a true Liverpoolian, maybe many a times he sung their popular and hearfelt encouragement which the true Reds give to the team. Yes ' Liverpool never walk alone'.
So do us, because Almighty God even in our deepest moments of sorry and suffering, never foresake us.HE will walk with us.
Yes it is a pity to see an exampe character like Dr. Chircop taken away from us so soon, but we should all find console that the short period Dr. Chircop spent among us on this planet, had left many indelible virtues, both politically and human wise, Why the hands of God is embracing such a genteleman, and we are bereaving his loss, let us be encouraged by his faith, fortitutde and loyalty.
Karl as a true liverpool fan, even from Heaven, will testify that we who so far are still here will never walk alone, as Almighty God guide us in his pathway to Heaven.
Adriana and children, be as strong as Karl in this difficult moment. You will never walk alone.
Clayton Luke Mula (on 13/10/08)
Karl,

We lost you but you're still in our hearts, sometimes it's difficult to accept why God takes our good people from earth to join him.

You was always with a smile on your face and you had a good character to share with your constituents, with those who had used your service as a doctor and aswell with all those who knew you through your political career.

You will never be forgotten by Malta and Gozo citizens for what you have done, you will be always in our hearts.

Karl, pray for all of us especially for your beloved family and for Malta and Gozo.

Rest In Peace.

I have always seen in Karl the epitome of those virtues which every true politician should possess: absolute integrity, family values, loyalty, humility, dedication and industriousness. Many, including myself, have lost a true and rare gentleman and friend here on Earth, but have gained another one, I am sure, in the Lord's bosom. His uncommon virtues should be a beacon for all.
Karl, we cannot text each other any longer, but I know you are, and will remain, close to us all. Please intervene for us with the Almighty.

Karl Chircop's passing has saddened a whole nation. Just when a ray of hope seemed to point to a slow but steady recovery, it was suddenly extinguished.

His family is in deep mourning but at least there must be a feeling of comfort that whatever could be done was done both at Mater Dei as well as the hospital in London.

The outpouring sympathy from the political and medical circles as well as of the general public, indicates what type of person Karl was and even if one did not know him personally, the depth of the loss is indeed felt.

May his fellow politicians take the lead from Karl who is unanimously regarded as putting the Nation's interest before else and has set an example of how sound principles should be adhered to unconditionally.

May he rest in peace.
Edward Pavia (on 13/10/08)
I read all the tributes and messages of sympathy here and I feel very gratified. It is sad that Karl has departed this life so soon especially when you consider that he left a young family and lots of people who depended on him as their doctor or parliamentary representetive. Karl was many things, but what stood out most about him was his humility. He was a nice man, too nice to be a politician even. I´ve known him since his mum Marion was having him. His dad Charlie died aged 43 too. I will miss Karl so very much. He was more than just a cousin to me. Liverpool FC have lost a very devout supporter and Malta lost someone who served her well. My heart goes out to his wife Adriana, his Children Jan, Franceska, Christian and Keith, and his mother Marion. May the good Lord watch over them. Good bye Karl, I know you are in a better place, but it is still such a shame that you left us so soon. Say hello to the Angels for me and may you now enjoy everlasting peace.

You left without saying goodbye, leaving a huge emptiness in our hearts. These last two months and 9 days the agony of helplessness and frustration we felt was beyond description. Up to the last dreaded hour, we were willing you to live. We kept trying hard not to lose hope. Yet you went away. We know you are in a better place now where all kind-heart and gentle people go, but how much we will miss you! You made us proud with your personality. People from every sphere of Maltese life have praised your altruistic and genteel character. You left a legacy as to how one must live life. You used your talent for the greater benefit of your loved ones and all who trusted you. Let your short life inspire our representatives to excel. The gain will be the respect and the love of the people, which according to Karl’s train of thought, are priceless objectives. All that has been written and said about him is proof enough.

I knew Karl since our childhood days as we grew up together. He was a truly wonderful person, always wearing a smile and ready to help. He was a perfect gentleman who added value with his presence to any situation. His friendships were not based on political colour but on genuine principles and he was always willing to assist even those whose opinions varied from his.

Malta has lost a promising politician but Karl's memory will live on. Sta. Lucia has lost an exemplary figure and a hard working family doctor. Malta's political scene has lost a man of integrity and a man of decency. It is hard to fathom such circumstances !

Karl may your soul rest in peace and your family be comforted in this sad time of loss. The country and the family lost a true politician and a gentleman. The saying says 'only the good die young' - what a tragic reality for our country it proved to be. Let us hope that Karl's memory and example lingers on and be a model for our young politicians. When you sacrifice your family's time for the well being of the country is a value as Mr Cacopardo said earlier on, becoming more and more of a rarity.

Rest in Peace Karl and pray for us from up there as our values are slowly whitering away. You believed in the right values, sacrifice, love for your country and compassion and service towards the ill fated in our society. Condolences to family Chircop also.

Psalm 23:

The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want.
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

My soul He doth restore again;
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
Even for His own Name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill;
For Thou art with me; and Thy rod
And staff my comfort still.

My table Thou hast furnishèd
In presence of my foes;
My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me;
And in God’s house forevermore
My dwelling place shall be.

RIP. May the Lord embrace you in His arms, and console Your loved ones.

Karl personified decency and respect in both private and political life. Most striking was his unstinting desire to be of service to his family, his clients, his friends and his country. I knew all the way his was an uphill struggle, but you never stop hoping when you know he would never leave you walking alone.

He was pleasant, energetic and positive, and he transmitted to everyone a sense of confidence that used to bring you up whenever you were down. My family and I will miss him. Our thoughts are with Adriana and his four children.

Karl's profession as a famiy doctor has brought him into contact with hundreds of people. A noble profession, one which strives to make life easier for others. so it stands to reason that now that he's gone he will be sorely missed. But people who do good don't really die. They keep on living in the memory of those whose lives they have touched with goodness. So it is with Karl.He is still here with us.

leo brincat (on 12/10/08)
As a matter of principle I never add blog comments either to defend myself or else to criticise my political rivals. But today I think this is the fastest and quickest way of publicly expressing my wife's and my sympathy to Adriana and their family and friends for the great loss they have suffered. We knew all along Karl had more than just an uphill struggle ahead of him, but we were always hoping in hope. He died only a few months after a moment of great political satisfaction for him. When he was so evidently and manifestly proud of having been appointed Main Opposition Spokesperson for Health.

Karl we shall miss you as a colleague, a friend and as one of the few guys around with a sense of humour! He was a joy to work with, always eager to seek advice, to share opinions and to crack the latest joke. His political commitment was for real.

This is indeed a moment of grief, sorrow and deep reflection.
Jeremy J Camilleri (on 12/10/08)

May you rest in peace my friend.
