A juvenile flamingo, which has been in Malta since mid-September, returned to the Għadira Nature Reserve yesterday with blood on its chest and head but the cause has still to be established.

BirdLife Malta, which has been keeping an eye on the bird, noticed that the flamingo left the reserve at 7.40 a.m. and when it returned an hour later it had blood on its chest and head.

A BirdLife spokesman said the nature of the injuries will be determined following examinations today.

The bird had left the reserve to either exercise before migrating or in an attempt to leave the island, the spokesman said.
