Mobile base stations and health
In recent articles, stating that mobile base stations are harmless, the European Commission, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Commission of Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) were all mentioned to be backing this statement.
Then why doesn't someone inform the public and especially the concerned "unlucky people" that happen to live near mobile base stations without any choice, of the latest news? Well the answer is probably because it isn't really good news for those of us, "unlucky people", who have the antennae forced upon us; the news was not "mobile base stations are harmless" but more like "there are reasons for precaution".
On September 8 and 9 a seminar was organised by the Radiation Research Trust called EMF & Health - A Global Issue... Exploring Appropriate Precautionary Approaches. Representatives of the EU, WHO and ICNIRP were all present. The conclusions were not as stated in the recent newspapers confirming that mobile base stations are harmless but here are just some of the mentioned points.
The 10-year-old ICNIRP guidelines are out of date. According to the recent article, "all the surveys carried out on mobile phone base stations in Malta and Gozo in the past have shown that emission levels of electromagnetic frequencies were far lower than internationally accepted limits. Studies carried out over the years by the MCA have shown EMF levels to be well below the maximum levels for public exposure stipulated by the ICNIRP". However, besides being out of date, the studies are only based on the "thermal effect".
There was also an important announcement about the potential high risks to children's health in the near future with regard to using mobile phones, made by Professor Yury Grigoriev, chairman of Russian National Committee on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, RNCNIRP.
The Citizens Initiative Kempten West, which was established after the installation of a mobile transmitter, is now able to present the first results of blood tests. Unfortunately, the conclusion of this study was that since the medically conducted tests carried out on residents living in the vicinity of the commissioned operational telecommunications mast proves a drastically increased health risk, immediate action by political and regulatory authorities, at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, is demanded. In order to prevent further endangerment of the health of residents, the medical point of view is that the operation of the telecommunications mast must immediately be stopped! (Dr Anna Blanz, Dr Markus Kern, Dr Hans-C. Scheiner).
Following the seminar, the need for precaution was confirmed by the latest news from the European Parliament. The Parliament voted 522 to 16 to recommend tighter safety standards for cell phones. In light of the growing body of scientific evidence linking cell phone use to brain tumours, the Parliament says, "The limits on exposure to electromagnetic fields [EMFs] which have been set for the general public are obsolete."
The European Parliament "is greatly concerned at the Bio-Initiative international report concerning EMFs, which summarises over 1,500 studies on that topic and which points in its conclusions to the health risks posed by emissions from mobile-telephony devices such as mobile telephones, UMTS, WiFi, WiMax and Bluetooth, and also DECT landline telephones." Further, it points out the need to "address vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, newborn babies and children".
The vote passed by a huge majority, with 97 per cent recommending tighter safety standards.
So now the European Parliament is realising that yes, there is reason for concern. Have our authorities here in Malta even read the BioInitiative Report before allowing mobile antennae to go up without a permit as long as they are less than 10 metres high?

However, why doesn't the mobile operators oblige with what I've written in the previous post if they have nothing to hide?
Re Radio and TV transmitters, although they use higher power, they are on different frequencies than those of the mobile operators which have different effects on the human body.
Saw your letter late at night hope you get to see this.
While I sympathise with your concern and certainly agree with you that hand-held mobile phones are possibly dangerous to vulnerable groupd esp children - I am always apalled at how complacent people are about our pollution from traffic whach has been scientifically PROVED to be harmful.
The current consensus is that telephone antennae do not pose a threat but that hand-held mobiles do.
Email me on gdmc@kemmunet.net.mt and I will send you a digital copy of a review on the scientific evidence of the adverse effects of pollution from traffic - now THAT is scary - just wait till you read the results of surveys on millions of people over the years.
Regards
George
Apart from my previous posting, you should know that radio and tv transmitters although using high power use different frequencies which are not as harmful as those used by mobile operators.
The only people that say Mobile Base Stations are harmless are the people making money from them or the industry and I can only assume you are one of them from this type of comment or you believe what studies were financed by the phone companies themselves. Isn't is clear to you that a mobile phone can be used for a short time while if I happen to have a Mobile Antenna next to me I stuck with it all the time. If you want to be a guinea pig stick one on your roof .....
I agree that the mobile phone is very near the head, but WHY doesn't the mobile operators oblige by publishing the data I requested if they have nothing to hide?
How do you know what power they are using if they have not published it?
End of subject.
@Mr Stephen Vella
One can decide if s/he wants to use a mobile phone, however one can not decide if he wants a mobile base station right next to his house. Mobile base stations are being put up everywhere and neighbours have no say. Why arent neighbours consulted? The people who put these base stations on their roof only think of the money they will recieve for renting their roof space. What do the neighbours get? Extra stress everytime they look at the base stations and think of the harm it may be causing to them and to their children!!
What if in the future studies confirm that there is a health risk, it will be too late then for the people living too close to an antenna. Money for damages caused to people's health cannot bring people back.
How come no permit is needed? Is this democracy when one person imposes her/his decision against so many people who object? Local councils and affected residents should be consulted before. Contracts shouldn't be done behind residents' backs.
For many years the tobacco giants managed to suppress all the studies that showed that cigarettes were causing harm. Eventually the truth emerged, companies were sued and now they must write on the packets that tobacco is harmful.
I believe the same will happen with these antennas. I'm sure that for now the mobile industry is hiding the evidence as billions of euros are at stake. Eventually when cluster cases of cancers will start to emerge around these masts, the oil will float to the surface
If the mobile operators have nothing to hide, why don't they publish their antenna patterns and antenna gain, whether they use beam-tilt and if so what is the angle, and the maximum power that they use so that independent analysis can be made?
Let's hope that their assets are frozen forthwith once they start being sued for damages caused to peoples health like the tobacco industry.
