Mosta in semis as Dingli win derby
Mosta took the point needed to make it to the semi-finals of the Maltco Division One KO after a 1-1 draw against an improving St George's side.
They join Pieta Hotspurs and Dingli Swallows with the other team set to be decided today when St Patrick face Senglea Athletic at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
Mosta were on the offensive right from the start and after two minutes Gianluca Calabretta was unlucky to see his shot hit the bar and on 23 minutes Ewurun drove the ball wide when well-positioned after being set up by Calabretta.
Mosta took the lead on 27 minutes when goalkeeper Andrea Gatt's clearance fell into the path of Lyden Micallef who lobbed the ball home.
St.George' s responded on 33 minutes when a Lawrence Mizzi free-kick was punched away by goalkeeper Claude Carbonaro. Four minutes later the Mosta custodian again kept out Mizzi's cross-shot.
St George's stepped up a gear after the break and on 68 minutes Mizzi dribbled his way past two players but was blocked by Carbonaro.
The Saints finally drew level on 73 minutes when John Nwoba headed home an Emerson Amaira corner.
Knock-Out holders Dingli Swallows sealed their top placing in Group 1 as they beat rivals Rabat Ajax in a pulsating derby. Following a poor first 45 minutes, by their standards, Dingli scored towards the end of the first half, and from then onwards they never looked back.
Rabat had most of the possession of the first half but did not trouble Dingli too much.
On 25 minutes a Glenn Magri grounder finished inches wide. Two minutes later Rabat went close again but Adrian Mifsud free-kick was well saved by Jeffrey Farrugia.
Just past the half hour Dingli struck. Uchanna Anywanna sped past his marker to slot the ball home after a Chris Muscat corner.
Six minutes before the break Emmanuel Muscat could have doubled the score for Jesmond Zammit's side but was thwarted by Jonathan Azzopardi who came out well to block his drive.
Dingli made it 2-0 on 56 minutes when the hard-working Roderick Spiteri forced his way past a couple of defenders and although his first attempt was blocked he made no mistake from the rebound.
Dingli could have added to their lead late on when Jeremy Agius rounded the keeper but hit a post.
Group 1: Dingli 10; Pieta H. 8; Mqabba 3; Rabat 2; Vittoriosa 1.
Group 2: Mosta 8; St Patrick 6; St George's 5; Senglea 4; San Ġwann 1.
