Nature Trust and Din L-Art Ħelwa have welcomed the Malta Environment and Planning Authority's decision to extend habitat protection to the entire area of Ta' Ċenċ, including the plateau.
Mepa also declared Wied Moqbol and Bengħajsa Point as protected areas within the Natura 2000 network, which means that these sites are now included within a network of protected areas across the EU.
Ta' Ċenċ, Wied Moqbol and Bengħajsa are vital coastal habitats, hosting communities of sea birds protected by the EU birds' directive. Furthermore, the Ta' Ċenċ plateau is rich in biodiversity and archaeological treasures.
Mepa's decision follows years of campaigning by Din L-Art Ħelwa and Nature Trust. The NGOs have called for effective legal enforcement at all these sites.
