Man charged with importing cocaine capsules in stomach

A Nigerian man was yesterday charged with importing drugs after cocaine-filled capsules were allegedly found in his stomach on his arrival to Malta on Thursday.

Victor Odaro Izevbigie, 34, is the fourth Nigerian national to be charged with importing drugs over the past two months.

He pleaded not guilty to conspiring to deal in cocaine and the possession of the drug. Mr Izevbigie was stopped after arriving in Malta from Spain.

In a statement last Friday, police said that Mr Izevbigie was stopped for a routine check the previous day by members of the police vice squad and the Customs drug section who believed he looked suspicious.

He was subjected to a medical test and an X-ray revealed that he had a number of capsules in his stomach allegedly containing cocaine, the police said.

Following his arraignment yesterday afternoon he was remanded in police custody. Police Inspector Johann Fenech prosecuted. Patrick Valentino represented Mr Izevbigie.
